The Costs of Healthcare

Healthcare continues to be the number issue facing employers today.  According to the 2003 Employee Benefit News-Hay Benefits Survey:

  • 96% of employers responding to the survey ranked health care costs as a top concern, followed by employee recruiting and retention, at 74%.
  • Health coverage costs increased from 2002-2003.  47% of respondents reported a 10-15% increase, 19% reported a 16-19% increase, and 16% reported an increase of at least 20%.

While health care costs in 2004 are projected to decrease slightly from the past 2 years,  (see Figure 1) costs are expected to remain in the double digits. The picture is dismal: despite a decrease in health care cost inflation, the cost of health care for employers continues to grow (see Figure 2).  Industry experts estimate that costs per employee will increase another $882.00 in 2005!

As depicted in the graph below, no major metropolitan area has experienced less than a 10% increase in health care costs in 2003.
